How to make the basic Granny Square in one color (intermediate) - options
c2007, 2008 Sandra Petit, http://www.crochetcabana.com

The granny square is worked in the round, but there are many ways to begin, end, and join the rounds. I'm sure there are even more than I'm including here, but at least you'll have a variety of options and can choose the method that works best for you.

There are at least four different ways to begin a granny (or any project worked in the round). I will list them and then demonstrate them.

Method 1: Make a slip knot, chain a particular number (chain 5, for example) and join with a slip stitch working first round into the ring

Method 2: Use the alternative to the slip knot, lay the yarn over the hook, then curl the yarn around the hook in a counter-clockwise motion, ch 5, and join with a sl st as in method 1 (see video)

Method 3: Start with an adjustable ring

Method 4: Make a slip knot, ch a particular number (chain 5, for example) and work your first round into the first chain

It doesn’t matter which one you use, but if you are making squares you are going to join together, it might be a good idea to use the same method for all of them, just for continuity sake.

Additional note: One round of the basic granny square is called a Granny's Daughter. Two rounds of the basic granny square is called a Saltine. (I have heard that is because it is about the size of a saltine cracker, but I can't verify where it began so I don't know if that is true or not).

Method 1 Start:

Make a slip knot.

Work a foundation chain of five chains. In a pattern that is noted as "ch 5". Join into a circle (or ring) by working a slip stitch into the first chain made -- which is the fifth chain from hook. This might be noted in a pattern as "join with sl st". Ch 2 or 3 to bring up to height, then work the first round into the center of the ring.

Method 2 Start:
same as above except instead of using a slip knot, you use the alternative (see video below)

Method 3 Start: Starting with the adjustable ring, ch 3 and work first round into the center ring (Note: First round of a granny square is called a granny's daughter)

Method 4 Start:

Make a slip knot, ch 5 and work your first round into the first chain (no photo of this method)

Now that you've BEGUN the granny, you have to end that first round. There are several ways to join rounds also. I have these on a separate page called Joining Rounds on a Granny Square.

Method 1 join: slip stitch in top chain of beginning ch3, then slip stitch in next two dc and in next ch-3 space, work succeeding rounds in same manner

Method 2 join: join first round with a dc, join succeeding rounds with a sc or hdc

Method 3 join: ch 1, hdc in top chain of beginning ch 3, then work first shell of next round in same space. Complete second shell of the first corner at the end of the round. Succeeding rounds are joined in the same way.

METHOD 1 JOIN:

slip stitch in top chain of beginning ch3, then slip stitch in next two dc and in next ch-3 space, ch 3 to start your next round, continue to work corner in that same space

METHOD 2 JOIN:

join first round with a dc,  ch 3 and begin next round corner in same space, working around the dc just made. join succeeding rounds with a sc or hdc

METHOD 3 JOIN

ch 1, hdc in top chain of beginning ch 3, then work first shell of next round in same space. Succeeding round are done the same way except on my final round I usually chain 3 and finish with the invisible finish off.

yo, insert hook in
 top chain of beginning chains

yo again

draw through all 3 loops to completed hdc

work first shell of round 2 around your hdc

continue your round working (shell, ch 1) along sides and (shell, ch 3, shell) in corners

when you get to the last full corner,
ch 1

now you have to finish the first corner by working the final shell

then join as you did before, working a chain 1, then a hdc in top chain of your beginning chains

the first shell of round 3 will be worked around the hdc, just as in the previous round
